GitHub Copilot Chat, the AI assistant, has arrived: Here’s what you need to know.
GitHub recently held its Universe 2023 event, where it unveiled a series of new features for developers. The main goal of these updates is to transform GitHub into an AI-powered development platform. Additionally, the American company presented its annual Octoverse report, which provides an overview of developer practices, with a particular focus on generative AI this year.
Developers now have a new AI assistant.
In March, GitHub launched GitHub Copilot Chat, an AI assistant powered by GPT-4, to help developers generate code and fix bugs. While the AI assistant was previously only available in beta, it will be accessible to everyone starting this month, as GitHub stated in its blog post.
Copilot Chat will be generally available in December 2023 as part of your existing GitHub Copilot subscription, for both organizations and individuals. This offering is also available for free to verified educators, students, and maintainers of popular open-source projects.
The company announced another update: Copilot Chat will be integrated directly into github.com and the mobile app (iOS and Android).
New features with GitHub Copilot Chat
GitHub has announced an enhanced user experience for Copilot Chat, offering more accurate code suggestions and detailed explanations powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 model. Developers can now discuss specific lines of code directly within their code flow and editor with this updated version of the assistant. This Copilot Chat update enables developers to generate code in seconds, fix bugs, receive in-depth analyses and explanations of code blocks, generate unit tests, and even get bug-fix suggestions. The new version is deeply integrated into the IDE (Integrated Development Environment), recognizing the developer's typed code and displayed error messages. For more details about this update, you can check out GitHub’s blog post.
“Copilot Chat uses your code as context and can explain complex concepts, suggest code based on your open files and windows, detect security vulnerabilities, and help identify and fix errors in the code, terminal, and debugger.”
Developers voiced a need, and GitHub responded by announcing that GitHub Copilot Chat will soon be available in the JetBrains IDE suite. This feature is currently in preview, and you can join the waitlist to gain access. Please note that an active GitHub Copilot subscription is required to use this functionality.
An offering available in February 2024: Copilot for Business.
GitHub has announced a new offering for businesses: Copilot Enterprise. This plan will be available starting February 2024 at $39 per user per month. Companies can already join the waitlist to take advantage of this offering.
